Trail running, hiking, and outdoor experiences in one of Slovenia’s best-preserved natural environments

The Zavarovalnica Sava Kočevsko Outdoor Festival hosted by I Feel Slovenia once again attracted more than 3,500 participants and visitors from 37 countries to Kočevje. The multi-day outdoor festival, combining trail running, hiking, and cycling, brought the area around Lake Kočevje and the surrounding forests to life between May 29 and 31, offering participants an authentic outdoor experience in one of Slovenia’s most pristine natural environments.

Three days of festival activities featured trail races of various distances, one- and two-day hikes, a children’s program, lakeside gatherings, and a diverse accompanying program. Visitors could also explore the festival expo, where sports and technical equipment providers were joined by numerous local vendors showcasing products, cuisine, and experiences from the Kočevsko region. The event once again drew its unique character from the mighty Kočevje forests, dedicated volunteers, and the strong support of the local community.

Kočevsko Outdoor was once again more than just a sporting event – it was an experience of nature, community, and an active lifestyle. Amid morning mist above the forests, long climbs, the silence of Kočevsko’s trails, and the energy of the lakeside finish area, participants once again experienced what keeps bringing them back: a true sense of wilderness and freedom.

Among the sporting highlights of this year’s festival was a new course record on the flagship race, the I Feel Slovenia Bear Trail 60 km. Slovenian runner Erik Mavser completed the demanding course with 1,835 meters of elevation gain in 5:35:02, setting a new trail record and achieving one of the most remarkable performances in the festival’s history.

Strong Response to the Inaugural Crocs 2-Day Hike

This year also saw an excellent response to the inaugural Crocs 2-Day Hike, which guided nearly 100 hikers through the vast forests of Kočevsko and the picturesque Kolpa Canyon. The two-day experience highlighted another side of the festival—a slower, more immersive way to explore nature without competitive pressure.

Over the course of two days, participants covered nearly 46 kilometers and approximately 2,000 meters of elevation gain while discovering many lesser-known corners of one of Slovenia’s best-preserved natural landscapes. “An unforgettable experience, great company, pristine nature, and beautiful views” were among the most common reactions from participants upon reaching the finish.

A Festival for All Generations

The children’s program once again received an enthusiastic response. A total of 170 children participated in the Bunny Trail kids race, while organized childcare allowed parents to take part in festival activities without concern. This further reinforces the festival’s commitment to creating a family-friendly outdoor experience that actively includes all generations.

The festival once again brought together experienced trail runners, recreational athletes, hikers, families, and nature lovers united by a passion for active outdoor living in an environment where nature still takes center stage.

Respect for Nature Remains a Priority

Sustainability remains a core value of the Zavarovalnica Sava Kočevsko Outdoor Festival hosted by I Feel Slovenia. This year, the organizing team once again focused on minimizing environmental impact through reusable course-marking materials, encouraging participants to use their own equipment at aid stations, and actively promoting responsible behavior in nature.

Special attention is given to protecting Kočevsko’s sensitive natural environment. All routes follow existing trails and are designed to avoid old-growth forest areas and other specially protected natural habitats. A responsible approach to the environment remains one of the festival’s key foundations and an important part of Kočevsko’s identity as one of Slovenia’s most preserved outdoor destinations.

Outdoor activities Kočevsko took place over two consecutive weekends this year

As part of the festival activities, Epic Rides Kočevje took place on 6 June 2026 – a recreational MTB cycling event designed for everyone who wants to experience the Kočevsko region on two wheels. More than 180 cyclists set off along carefully selected gravel roads and forest trails through one of Slovenia’s best-preserved forest regions, where the focus was on enjoying nature, socializing, and exploring the wilderness at their own pace. The project is organized by Adria Bike, which brings more than 15 years of experience in organizing cycling events. Today, the Epic Rides series connects more than 4,000 participants, 35 events, and 24 destinations.

As the festival concludes, the organizers would like to thank all participants, partners, volunteers, members of the local community, and visitors who helped create one of the most successful editions of the Kočevsko Outdoor Festival to date.

Trail running is unpredictable by nature. Steep climbs, fast descents, and technical sections constantly shift your intensity. Your nutrition strategy should reflect this variability — it needs to be flexible, not static.

When fuelling is executed properly, you:

sustain consistent energy output
delay the onset of fatigue
lower the risk of gastrointestinal (GI) distress
support faster recovery post-race

Phase 1: Carb loading (24–48h before)

This phase focuses on maximizing glycogen stores, your body’s primary energy source during endurance efforts.

Recommended intake: 8–10 g carbohydrates per kg body weight per day.
→ For a 70 kg athlete: approx. 560–700 g carbs daily

To reach this level efficiently:

prioritize low-fiber, easy-to-digest foods (white rice, pasta, bread)
keep fat and protein intake moderate to allow higher carb intake
include liquid carbohydrates (e.g. isotonic drinks) if appetite is reduced
spread intake across multiple meals and snacks

Keeping fiber low is important, as excessive fiber increases the likelihood of stomach issues during the race.

Phase 2: Pre-race (2–4h before)

The goal here is to top up glycogen stores while ensuring optimal hydration before the start.

Recommended intake: 1–4 g carbohydrates per kg body weight.

Practical approach:

choose easily digestible carbohydrate sources
avoid high fat and high fiber foods
include fluids with electrolytes to support hydration

Hydration should start well before the gun goes off. Arriving at the start already hydrated is a key performance factor.

Phase 3: Mid-race fuelling

This is where performance is either maintained—or lost. Once glycogen levels drop, performance typically declines quickly, not gradually.

To prevent that, fuelling must match the demands of the effort:

60–90 g carbs/hour for moderate intensity
90–120 g carbs/hour for high intensity
500–600 ml fluids/hour as a baseline
up to 1–1.5 L/hour in hot conditions

Since glycogen storages are limited, timing is critical. Instead of following a rigid schedule, adapt intake to the course:

increase carbohydrate intake before climbs
maintain or slightly reduce carbohydrate intake on descents and flats
stay proactive—don’t wait until energy drops

A flexible approach helps stabilize energy levels and reduces digestive stress.

Hydration & sodium

Sweating leads to both fluid and sodium loss. Replacing fluids with water alone can dilute sodium levels and impair absorption.

Consequences may include:

A unique 2-day hiking experience through the wilderness of Kočevsko

For those who truly want to feel Kočevsko, reconnect with nature, and mindfully explore an unspoiled landscape, the two-day hike is one of the most complete experiences of the festival. This is not a typical hiking trip, but a carefully designed escape, where time slows down and your attention shifts from the destination to the journey itself.

Over two days, you will cover nearly 46 kilometres through one of the largest preserved forest areas in Europe. The route takes you from Reško Lake deep into the forests of Kočevski Rog, across gentle ridges and past viewpoints that open up towards the canyon of the Kolpa River. The landscape reveals itself gradually and patiently, becoming more primal, quiet, and authentic with every kilometre.

On the first day, the route is nearly 24 kilometres long. The trails lead you through untouched parts of the forest, along old paths and sections where nature has been setting the rules for centuries. The day ends at Lukčeva Homestead, where you can choose to spend the night in a tent under the stars or in a room at the homestead. A warm dinner, the simplicity of the setting, and an evening by the fire await you.

The second day begins calmly, with breakfast and an easy continuation of the route. The trail, just over 21 kilometres long, gradually climbs to scenic ridges above the Kolpa Valley, where some of the most beautiful views in southern Slovenia open up. Along the way, Kostel Castle also comes into view – a mighty fortress perched on a steep rock ledge, watching over the river and the landscape for centuries.

Join this two-day escape from the rush of everyday life and experience a rare sense of remoteness and connection with nature in one of the few forests that still remains as it once was.

One of the highlights in Kočevje is The Queen of Rog. Not far from the Rajhenav Primeval Forest stands a fir tree 55 metres tall and with a trunk circumference of more than half a metre. Although foresters discovered it only around a hundred years ago, they allowed it to keep growing and become the largest tree far and wide.

Places are limited – only 20 spots are still available.

The 5 km, 10 km and 15 km hiking routes follow the same paths as the trail runs, while allowing every hiker to explore the trails at their own pace. The routes lead through dense spruce and beech forests, where light filters through the canopy and creates a feeling of being far removed from the world. You will walk across the Rog Plateau, past the remains of former Gottschee villages, where the cultural landscape still whispers stories of the past.

5 km SAVA Bambi Trail – your first encounter with the wilderness

In just a few kilometres, the shortest route reveals the essence of Kočevsko – silence, dense forest, and the feeling that you have stepped somewhere where humans are only visitors. The trail runs along the edge of the Rajhenav Primeval Forest, where the forest changes – older, darker, and more raw. Entry is not allowed, but even the view from the outside signals a true encounter with the wilderness.

10 km KinVital Fox Trail – a deeper experience of Kočevski Rog

The 10-kilometre route takes you deeper into Rog, where soft forest trails alternate with old forest roads. Here, you begin to feel the vastness of Kočevsko – rolling forests without a clear edge, a sense of orientation slowly slipping away, and the complete absence of noise. You walk past clearings where the forest briefly opens up, only to close around you again moments later. This is the route where you begin to understand why Kočevsko is one of the most forested regions in Europe.

15 km Sport Vision Lynx Trail – the full Kočevski Rog experience

The longest route leads from Kočevsko Lake through more diverse sections of forest. Along the way, you will feel like part of the past – walking past abandoned villages, old paths, and discovering a cultural landscape that the forest is slowly reclaiming.

Choose your distance:

60 km I FEEL SLOVENIA Bear Trail – the main challenge of the festival

Bear Trail is the royal distance of the event. Sixty kilometres of continuous trail through one of the least populated regions of Slovenia.

Runners head deep into the Kočevje forests, accompanied by long rolling ridges, occasional slightly technical descents, and narrow trails that require focus until the last kilometre. The route runs along the edge of primeval forest areas, in an environment inhabited by bear, lynx, and wolf, which gives the run a special feeling of wilderness and respect for nature.

The profile is demanding but thoughtfully designed. It is not about extreme elevation gain, but about constant work of legs and mind. Bear Trail is intended for runners who want to test their preparedness over a longer distance while building their competitive profile.

The race brings ITRA points, UTMB Index, and points for the Salomon Trail Running League and is an important stop in the season for many serious trail runners from Slovenia and abroad.

The run itself is beautiful, the course is not too difficult, it is very fast, perfectly marked, and a big plus is that most of the route runs through forests, which means we mostly avoid direct sun and it is pleasantly refreshing.

30 km SALOMON Wolf Trail – the turning-point distance where true endurance begins

The route leads deeper into the Kočevje forests, onto narrow, soft trails where you can discover the most forested area in Slovenia in a running stride. Thirty kilometres of running through unspoiled nature in Kočevsko represents an important step up from shorter routes. This is the distance where pace, energy, and concentration management come to the forefront.

The surface is soft, natural, occasionally slightly technical, and you will be surrounded on all sides by beautiful shades of green – leaves, trees, undergrowth, bushes, and meadows. Runners cross sections with roots and natural obstacles, run across rolling Dinaric terrain and along the edge of UNESCO-protected primeval forest areas, while the route respects the sensitivity of the environment and does not enter protected zones.

The race is part of the Salomon Trail Running League and brings ITRA points and UTMB Index, which means the result counts in an international context.

One of the most unique moments was arriving at a meadow in the bear feeding area – a dry tree with claw marks high above the ground is a sight that stays vividly in your memory. That’s when it really hits you how small we are and how much peace exists in the middle of the forest.

15 km Sport Vision Lynx Trail – balance between speed and terrain awareness

Fifteen kilometres represents an ideal balance between accessibility and running challenge. The route leads through diverse sections of Kočevski Rog, where soft forest paths and trails alternate. 10 km KinVital Fox Trail – playful and light

Ten kilometres that offer a perfect introduction to trail running – accessible enough to complete the challenge without problems and dynamic enough to show what trail running really means.

The route runs along forest paths and single tracks, through alternating open clearings and dense forest. The terrain is playful and flowing, yet still varied enough to require attention.

This is the distance for first steps, for finding the feeling, and for those who want to experience Kočevsko without the pressure of results

5 km Sava Bambi Trail – first contact with the wilderness

A short, simple route, perfect for beginners, families, young runners, and those who are stepping onto forest trails for the first time. It is suitable for beginners, younger runners, or anyone who wants to experience Kočevsko at an easy pace.

Four-legged companions are also welcome on the shortest distance of the festival, but must be on a leash at all times during the race and the festival.

La Primafit Vertical Fridrihštajn – the shortest but most brutal challenge

Vertical Fridrihštajn is an explosive climb to one of the most iconic points of Kočevsko. A short but intense route leads straight uphill towards the ruins of Fridrihštajn Castle, which reign above the forests and offer one of the rawest views of this wild landscape.

The battle with the incline begins on a steep ascent near the MTB Center Kočevje and requires strength, focus, and determination from the very first step.

The Vertical is intended for runners who want to test their raw uphill power and for everyone looking for a short but intense encounter with one of the most characteristic points of Kočevsko.

Bunny Trail – children’s run for first trail steps

Bunny Trail is a short, approximately 300 m long playful run by Kočevje Lake for the youngest and smallest legs. Joy, the serious challenge of first steps, and the feeling of a big competition are no joke for runners.

Children can run independently or accompanied by parents, and the whole experience is designed to bring them closer to running in nature and present it as something beautiful, relaxed, and unforgettable.

The Zavarovalnica Sava Kočevsko Outdoor Festival hosted by I feel Slovenia places runners in one of the wildest and most unspoiled environments in Slovenia – where the kilometres pass in the silence of the forests, far from asphalt and crowds.

Jure Orehek (1st place, 60 km Bear Trail 2025) and Klemen Štular (2nd place, 30 km Wolf Trail 2025) reveal what surprised them most about the course – and why they love coming back to the festival.

How would you describe Kočevsko in one sentence?

Beautiful wild nature and a true paradise for trail running.

Why did you decide to race at KOF?

I decided to race at KOF because these places were fairly unknown to me, and it seemed like I could really get to know the landscape over 60 km. Also because I was looking for a trail race with almost no asphalt sections.

How would you describe the race, the trails and the festival atmosphere?

The race itself is beautiful, the 60 km course is not too difficult, it is very fast and perfectly marked. A big plus is that most of the route runs through forests, which means we mostly avoid direct sun and it feels pleasantly refreshing.

Why should every serious trail runner stand on the start line of the 60 km Bear Trail at least once?

Because the trail runs through authentic wilderness, which means enjoying kilometres of silence on long forest sections and battling with yourself.

What was your key to victory at KOF?

My key to victory at KOF was patience, proper hydration and observing my competitors.

What advice would you give to beginners?

First of all, enjoy it. Listen to your body and increase the workload gradually. And when you feel ready, come to Kočevsko.

How would you describe Kočevsko?

Wilderness, a welcoming atmosphere, excellent organisation, lots going on, and a lake for a refreshing swim. Kočevsko gives you a unique feeling of wilderness. Everything is tied together by excellent organisation and lively festival atmosphere by the lake.

What does it feel like to run through the wilderness?

Special. While running, you feel the power of the vast forests and keep one eye on the surroundings for any “interesting” animals, while at the same time enjoying the peace that only the Kočevje forest can offer.

How many times have you raced at KOF and why do you come back?

I’ve raced at KOF once so far. I chose the 30-kilometre course, but I will definitely come back to discover the others as well. What pulls me back is exactly this wilderness, something you can only experience there. I come to every race because of my result, but I return to places where the overall experience was truly good – and KOF was exactly that.

How would you describe the course and the atmosphere?

Even the beginning is something special: a bus takes you deep into the forest, where the start line is. During the ride, you try to chat casually, but in your mind everyone is already in the starting blocks – a little nervous, a little absent and fully focused on what is ahead. The course is very runnable, with no technical sections, so you can really push and let your legs roll. A huge added value is the lake, where you can cool off after the race, lie down on the shore and enjoy the warm sun and the beautiful view. That is the magical part of KOF that truly surprised me.

What does this course have that others don’t? What makes it so special? Which part of the course stayed with you the most?

One of the most unique moments was arriving at a meadow in the area near a bear feeding site – a dry tree with claw marks high above the ground is a sight that stays vividly in your memory. That is when it really hits you how small we are and how much peace there is in the middle of the forest.

How important is it to you that the festival is family-friendly and that free childcare is also available?

Very important. My family came with me to cheer me on – my wife and two children. They are very well taken care of too. The finish straight itself is great, children can cheer with flags and rattles provided by the organiser. They can also have fun by the lake. The festival activities at the venue keep their attention, especially the ice cream stand. I also heard about the childcare and children’s race, which mine didn’t join last year, but it’s great that the option exists.

Would you recommend Kočevsko to families?

Definitely. I would recommend the Kočevsko Outdoor Festival to everyone who loves wilderness, movement in nature, good food and socialising afterwards. One of the better trail events for families – children really can’t get bored there.

Childcare and running for the little ones

While you take on the Kočevje hills on Saturday, May 30, we’ll take care of your little ones. Your children will be in a safe, playful, and stimulating environment. Our goal is simple: carefree parents on the course and smiling kids at the finish line.

Safety, good vibes, and creativity will be led by Luna Hočevar, a preschool education student with extensive experience working with children in kindergartens and primary schools. This is Luna’s third year being part of the festival and she always creates a space where children feel welcome, relaxed, and curious.

Childcare will be available on Saturday from 7:30 AM to 2:00 PM and is intended for children aged 5 and up. During this time, they’ll enjoy themselves in our creative corner under the attentive care of our educators.

What will they do?

Creative workshops: Exploring colors, shapes, and materials while creating unique pieces they’ll proudly take home.
Play & teamwork: Fun games that encourage movement, cooperation, and connection.
Face painting: Kids can transform into forest animals and head off on a little adventure.
A little mess, lots of laughter: Expect creative chaos, plenty of laughter, and even more pride in their creations.

While you enjoy your run, your children will be in safe and trusted hands. At the end of the day, they’ll be waiting for you full of smiles, stories and new experiences.

KIDS RUN

Once you’re back from your challenge, it’s time for the little heroes. The kids run starts at 3:00 PM, with race number pickup between 2:00 PM and 3:00 PM. The course is approximately 300 meters long and takes place directly at the festival venue. Children can run independently or alongside you. It’s about joy, movement and an unforgettable experience.

Participation is free and together with our partners, we’ve prepared small practical prizes for all young runners.

FAMILY – FRIENDLY EVENT VENUE BY LAKE KOČEVJE

The main venue is located right next to Lake Kočevje, offering excellent opportunities for an active yet relaxing family weekend. Visitors will be able to enjoy a variety of water activities – from swimming and fishing to SUP rentals – so there will be something for everyone.

For those who wish to stay close to the event, Camp Jezero is available just nearby, offering space for motorhomes, tents, as well as a selection of glamping cabins. In addition, Kočevje provides several other accommodation options, which you can explore via the link below.

March 8 is a moment each year to pause and reflect on the role of women in society, sport and community. At Kočevsko Outdoor, we are proud to share something that truly inspires us: for many years now, women have made up 50% of all registered participants at the Kočevsko Outdoor Festival.

This is a sign that the trail community is becoming increasingly diverse, courageous and connected. Women are a vital part of the energy that defines our festival. At the start line, on the trails, at the aid stations and at the finish line, you help create the atmosphere that makes this festival more than just a sporting event.

A festival where every woman feels welcome

When we create the festival, we don’t think only about kilometers and elevation gain. We also think about how participants will feel.

Our goal is simple: that everyone and especially every woman can feel confident, supported and welcome at the festival.

What does this mean in practice?

At Kočevsko Outdoor, we have been introducing, implementing and developing measures to support women for many years. These initiatives help ensure that every participant can enjoy a more comfortable and relaxed experience:

Free sanitary pads and tampons are available at all aid stations, so every runner or hiker can continue their journey without worry.
We know that during preparations for the festival something beautiful, and sometimes unexpected, can happen – pregnancy. That is why the festival has a pregnancy policy that allows appropriate adjustments based on wellbeing and safety.
We strive to build a community where you can feel strong, welcomed and included, regardless of your result, pace or distance.

KOF running meet-ups

KOF running meet-ups in collaboration with Sport Vision and Salomon

Dear trail running community and everyone who feels drawn to explore forest trails. In collaboration with Sport Vision and Salomon, we are organizing three running meet-ups where we will combine training, share practical knowledge, and enjoy relaxed social time together.

Dates and Locations:

March 14, 2026, at 9:00 AM – Ljubljana
April 19, 2026, at 9:30 AM – Ljubljana
May 17, 2026, at 9:00 AM – Kočevje

Location for the first and third meet-ups: Trdnjava 3, 1330 Kočevje (TIC Jezero)

The location for the third meet-up will be announced in due time — all registered participants will also receive the details via email.

At the second meet-up, we will also be joined by runners from the Runs’n Coffee running club.

How will the running meet-ups take place?

The meet-ups are free of charge and designed so that both beginners and experienced trail runners can join. They will be organized into three difficulty groups:

8–10 km
15–18 km
25 km

The routes will lead along forest paths and trails, where we will experience in practice the differences between road and trail running and test how the body responds to varied terrain.

After the run, we will provide light refreshments at the starting location to replenish energy and spend some more time socializing.

Prize draw

At each meet-up, we will also organize a prize draw with practical prizes provided by Kočevsko Outdoor Festival and partners Sport Vision and Salomon.

Salomon shoe testing

All participants will have the opportunity to borrow Salomon footwear and test their models.

Registration and additional information

Participation is free of charge; however, registration is mandatory for organizational purposes. You may register for one, two, or all three meet-ups. The number of participants is limited to 60 per event. All registered participants will receive additional information by email one or two days before the meet-up.
